chile i joked about it once and immediately there was an angry ass anti-black latino in my inbox whining about “she could never be one of YOU PEOPLE”.

I always thought she looked like a lot of the Black Natives girls I knew in Mexico (especially like some of our cousins). Oh no, folks. Not your Selena being Black and Native. Anyone that doesn’t see that in her needs to GTFO because she certainly wasn’t a white Mexican-American.
Was someone in her ancestry line African? Probably. We know her mother is Native, but on her pop’s side, she is Mexican, and being Mexican means that there will more than likely be a complex mix of African/Native/Spanish.
Did she identify as a Afro Latina? No. Should we label her as such just because we assume her features are what we would consider to be “black?” Probably not. It’s not just about where a great great great grandparent was from, it’s about the community you are part of and whose culture and values you identify with.
All we can assume is what she said she identified as, and that is Mexican-American. That in itself, like I said, is pretty loaded and contains a lot of mixes, certainly no one part of that mix more important than the other.
I kind of really love art-is-the-world right now.

The depressing moment when you Google “Selena” and get images of Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez instead of Selena Quintanilla(-Perez).
And then being grateful that Wikipedia still recognizes Selena without her last name.
