It’s probably better for her in the long run that she didn’t win the finale. Because now, everyone’s shitting themselves. Seriously, you know that chile has producers scrambling to work with her.

This is why I think wearing bindi if you’re not a part of the culture is a form of cultural appropriation:

  • If it’s in the context of a form of cultural exchange (i.e. an Indian, Hindu, or person of any other race, religion, culture, or ethnicity which wears bindi) than that person is giving you the privilege of allowing you to wear it. But if you take it upon yourself to put it on you’re taking something of culture significance to someone, to an entire culture/ethnicity/religon/race of people, and bastardizing it for the sake of fashion.
  • There are a lot of Hindu and Indian women who aren’t offended by it, but I don’t think it’s fair to justify cultural appropriation by pointing to the people who aren’t offended- what are you going to say to the many people who are offended?
  • To the people who want to make the argument that they hold little cultural significance anymore: that is because white people stepped in and decided they were a fashion statement therefore robbing bindi of their cultural significance.
  • And- maybe this is just me- but the whole “it’s not cultural appropriation because I know the ~significance~” thing strikes me as bullshit. To me it sounds like: “bindi are so pretty and cool and trendy I want to wear them but to avoid being called racist I’ll read the Wikipedia page about their significance and only listen to people who tell me they’re not offensive oh see now your argument is invalid and you cant touch me because I know the ~meaning behind them.~” See, I think that’s convoluted thinking because your intention there is wearing them as a fashion statement- so you learn about them to justify wearing them because they’re pretty, instead of say, learning about the culture, what bindis mean, then taking an interest in wearing them (on that note: having interest in a culture and their practices doesn’t give you permission to step in and steal something of importance to said culture.)

That’s all I really have to say about the issue. I’m not and won’t to claim to be incredibly well educated regarding the subject and obviously I can’t lend much perspective because I am white, but when people of the culture you’re taking something from say that what you’re doing is offensive and wrong? I think you should listen to them.

Here are some posts regarding the issue from PoC’s perspective that I think you should read if you’re interested:

http://earth2snowflake.tumblr.com/post/23104872838/evomit-studies-and-is-very-interested-in-the-culture

That last bulleted point for ALL the cultural appropriation and just about everyone who defends it with that argument and the mentality behind it.

I’ve sent like 4-5 messages to tumblr about this, and since they won’t take action? I will.

Warning that the links below are super triggering. This is so fucked. Ugh. Signal boost and report this.

dumbthingswhitepplsay:

Dear Tumblr:

How many rape threats do I have to receive before you do your jobs? 10? 20?
50? 100?

As a victim of rape, your lack of any attention to this matter is appalling
and fucking ridiculous.

Well, here are some links for you, as well as the link to the person’s new
blog:
http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778927312/severe-tw-on-this-one
Threatens to rape and murder me.

http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778881965/remember-how-i-asked-for-proof-about-where-ive-been
Throws slurs against black people, makes rape threats out to be a “joke”.

http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778852570/hmmmm-and-im-the-bad-person
“Funny” rape is okay on tumblr, apparently.

http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778834262/so-this-fuckhead-http-1900fuckoff-tumblr-com
More “funny” rape.

http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778807726/report-this-page
Admitted stalking.

http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778774295/1900fuckoff-im-probably-going-to-hit-my-post
Rachel being transphobic and leaving the new name of her blog
21fatstreet.tumblr.com so that you can ban both.

http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778760256/hmmmm-and-im-the-bad-person
Another rape threat.

http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778740643/princess-brat-the-difference-between-jokes-and-actual
Rachel threatens to rape a completely different person, but it’s okay, because it’s just LOLZ.

http://dumbthingswhitepplsay.tumblr.com/post/21778714590/the-difference-between-jokes-and-actual-oppression
Rachel links to her own stalker behavior and rape threats, claiming that all of this is okay because it’s just JOKES and rairaichu should be banned for calling me a nigger.

These are only the rape threats against me that I could manage to go
through. THE RAPE THREATS GO ON FOR PAGES AGAINST ME AND OTHER PEOPLE UNDER THE GUISE OF “A JOKE”.

HOW MANY RAPE AND MURDER THREATS ARE OKAY, TUMBLR?

HOW. MANY?

* * * * * * *

Signal boost the shit out of this. Report these shitstains to abuse@tumblr.com and support@tumblr.com. Rape and murder threats from a white person to a PoC is no fucking joke, and this chick is posting any personal information she thinks she can get, while claiming that the intent to rape me is a “joke”.

I am not fucking standing for it.

Some “nice” things white people do that are still built in white supremacist attitudes.

dumbthingswhitepplsay:

I am seeing these same things over and over and over again, and white people, you just haven’t learned the meaning of the term “shut up” yet. Hopefully this will teach it to you.

Now, in and of themselves, these comments are not ACTIVELY racist. They do not ACTIVELY perpetuate violence. However, what they do is make you, and other white people believe that you still get to have some say in a “discussion” on racism, that it’s still something that you need to “discuss” with PoC (it’s not, white people never have anything relevant to say on racism, ever). It makes you believe that the feelings and experiences of PoC are still some kind of “chat” that you can just waltz into and “talk” about.

It’s not.

There is no talking when people are sharing experiences. DO NOT:

  1. Comment on a post wherein a PoC talks about their experience with racism to soapbox about how much you hate your fellow white people and how much it hurts you and sucks to see them ruining your anti-racism efforts and how much you wish they’d all just STOP.
  2. Talk about how you’d personally like all white people to die. Because if you did, you wouldn’t still be here.
  3. Talk about how glad you are that YOU don’t suffer like that.
  4. Treat a PoC you don’t know as a friend and say things you’d say to friends, but not to strangers. All y’all white people is strangers far as I’m concerned, except the token few who know who they are. If you aren’t sure, you’re not in the crew. Unlike white people, PoC tend to be much more stringent about who they consider and acquaintance and a FRIEND, especially with white people, because we’ve been CUT by you so many times we expect to get it EVERY TIME.
  5. Respect that we may never, ever trust you because your fellow whiteys fucked it up for you first, and don’t beg for or demand respect from us. Case in point: I was not even an ounce surprised by burntcicero’s, or mandapolos’ fabulous racist/transphobic displays, even though they’d been mostly tolerable until then, because…white people.
  6. We really, really, really don’t care about your feelings on racism. Not even if we’ve known you for a year. Not even if we’ve known you for a lifetime. There is never a moment where I think to myself “oh hey, I could really use a white person’s opinion on racism”. EVER. I NEVER THINK THIS. I thought about the pain of being shot up my ass by dolphin jizz once. That means I think about being murdered by dolphin jizz more than I consider getting the opinion of a white person on racism. Your opinion on racism is LESS IMPORTANT than dolphin jizz. Just. Keep that in mind.
  7. We don’t care if you thought someone we called out on racism deserved it. At all. Once again. Dolphin jizz is more important to me than you in this conversation.
  8. Stop asking us what we think about other PoC. Sometimes you’ll get an answer, sometimes you won’t, but these questions are largely just crude attempts to start shit and have no fucking value to us.
  9. Stop asking us about some thing your racist white teacher said to you. If you’re in a class, you’re perfectly capable of googling the information if you think it’s wrong. If your teacher says something in direct contradiction to us; your white teacher is wrong. Why? Because they’re white and get no opinion, much like you.
  10. Stop giving us stories about racist shit you saw.
  11. Stop leaving random comments on things just because you want to feel you’re interacting with us when we aren’t your friends.
  12. Don’t bother to step into a conversation on racism if you never stand in solidarity with us but want to act as if you’re correcting shit. At least three people who follow me I never see reblogging anything helpful or spreading the word, or doing shit for anyone, CONSISTENTLY step into a conversation just to be contrary without much to say, only the scantest idea of facts, and basically just to be a fucking problem. Trust me, we seent you. Trust me, we know your purpose is to be a lazy pseudo-intellectual fapping to yourself. Trust me, you will get blocked and avoided.
  13. If you’re going to correct a fact: 1) make sure it’s an actual fact and not some bullshit whitey fact, 2) don’t do it while we’re upset over racism, and 3) for the love of fucking god, do not incorrectly correct us WHILE we’re upset about racism!
  14. Stop asking us questions about some book you read, some essay you read, some article you read as if we already know about it. Stop treating us like magical racism gurus, and try treating us like human beings. No; we are not going to drop what we’re doing to read that article, buy that book, or start that TV show because you DESPERATELYYYYYYY need our opinion on it. This line of questioning is hands down one of the most annoying I’ve ever gotten.
  15. Lastly, and I’m not kidding, you seriously don’t get to have an opinion or discussion on racism. If you see a post that sounds like it’s saying “white people don’t have a right to be angry about their own suffering” when it doesn’t do so in explicit terms, punch yourself in the face until you know better; you have a problem and it’s called “you’re a white supremacist”.
  16. Do not step into an argument between PoC, EVEN TO DEFEND YOUR FRIENDS. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE WRONG.

Finally, just keep this in mind. Racism discussions about PoC are not the place for you to do anything. At all. Your idle commentary is not appreciated. Your derailing to focus on something funny or ironic? Not appreciated. This is not the time for your small talk, self-inclusion bullshit tactics. Stop. Cease. Desist.

Agree on all of it, though not entirely to the extreme extents, ie dolphin jizz. But that’s just me.

About

My name is Adri and I currently live in Austin, Texas.

This blog is my personal blog where I put my things and stuff. I discuss rape relatively openly and this is a trigger warning that this blog could potentially be triggering for survivors. I do try to put trigger warnings on the posts and I'm starting to make them after the break posts as well, though I will admit that I am too lazy to backtrack all of my posts ever. And I'll also admit that I don't always toss trigger warnings on things. I'm a budding feminist and so I tend to post feminist things here as well.

I plan on going to medical school in a few years after I get my bachelor's in Biochem, and with that I have the separate page Diary of a would be Medical Examiner (ME).

I tend to like things on my phone, it serves as a bookmark to read them later. I reblog and try to cite resources. I'm open to messaging both anony and public.

I posted a tag page if you want to browse by my tags.

Much love. ♥ Adri
